European Union Could Respond to ‘Unwarranted’ US Visa Bans, Spokesperson States

The EU could “respond swiftly and decisively” against what it calls “unjustified” visa bans issued by the US against five Europeans involved in fighting digital hatred and disinformation, an EU official has said.

European Leaders Decry US Move as ‘Intimidation’

European leaders such as Emmanuel Macron charged the US administration of “coercion and intimidation”, after the travel bans targeted figures that were central to campaigns to introduce legislation governing US-based technology firms.

“For too long, ideologues in Europe have led coordinated campaigns to coerce American platforms to punish American viewpoints they disagree with,” stated the US secretary of state online. “The current administration will no longer tolerate such actions of extraterritorial censorship.”

Broad Criticism Across Europe

Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives supported France in condemning the decision.

The restrictions were enacted this week on an ex-European commissioner who helped draft the bloc’s digital governance law, as well as several anti-disinformation campaigners, including two in Germany and two in the UK.

A Deepening Dispute Regarding Governance

This European legislation is viewed by Washington as a form of censorship, whereas EU authorities argue the regulations are essential to combat inflammatory language and disinformation.

This row threatens to become part of a much broader existing political and ideological clash between Washington and Europe.
