The English and Wales Drawn Together for 2027 Rugby World Cup in Australia

Draw event for the 2027 tournament
The group draw was overseen by rugby icons such as former All Black Dan Carter.

England together with Wales will face off in an identical group for the World Cup in 2027, promising a highly-anticipated early clash in the tournament Down Under. They are joined in Group F by the Tongan Ikale Tahi and Zimbabwe.

This draw mirrors their famous meeting in the group phase of the 2015 tournament, where Wales' victory at England's home ground contributed to the hosts' shock early exit.

Key Group Pairings

Ireland and Scotland also share a group once again, just as the situation from the 2023 edition. On that occasion, Ireland secured a convincing victory, with Scotland unable to progress to the knockout stages.

Los Teros and Os Lobos, who each impressed as underdogs in France, round out that same group.

Significantly, the victors of these two groups are kept apart from holders and top-ranked the Springboks before the final, presuming the South Africans top their own group.

Knockout Implications

If the groups conclude in line with the current global standings, further leading contenders like New Zealand and France would also be kept apart from both England and the Irish until the championship decider.

Under those circumstances, Argentina would be the remaining highly-seeded nation on the same half of the elimination bracket as England and Ireland.

Tournament Hosts Draw Blockbuster Fixture

Tournament hosts Australia find themselves together with their great rivals and triple champions New Zealand in Group A.

Australia will open the tournament in the city of Perth on October 1st, 2027 in a marquee match aimed at jump-start the competition.

Elsewhere, reigning champions South Africa have drawn the Azzurri, Georgia and Romania. France are in a pool with Japan, 2031 hosts the USA and Manu Samoa.

Larger Format for 2027

Los Pumas will take on the Flying Fijians, Spain and Canada as the tournament expands to 24 teams from the twenty who took part in France.

The 2027 tournament will introduce a round of 16 stage for the very first time in Rugby World Cup history.

While the victor of Pool F may avoid some of the game's biggest beasts early on, they will have to face the second-placed team from Group B – most likely the Italians – in the first knockout round.

A total of four of the other six group winners will face a third-placed side from the pool stages.
