They're Repeating in America What They Executed with Christianity

Trumpism's most telling and distinctive occasions – not its most crucial, nor most brutal, nor most hazardous, nor most senseless, but perhaps its most illuminating – emerged earlier this harvest season. During the period of a few weeks, the US president began displaying the public his intentions for a lavish reception room double the dimensions than the White House and subsequently started solo dismantling the eastern section to build it.

He has done things ten thousand times worse – the present calculation of casualties due to his slashing to USAID amounts to 600,000 and rising, and this week a study predicted his energy policies would cause deaths 1.3 million more. Yet nothing as characteristic. No previous president would have attempted – really, no other president would have contemplated – solo demolishing significant portions of the presidential residence in order to erect a palace-inspired entertainment space, with the enthusiastic participation of multiple the richest Americans, almost all of whom maintain dealings with federal agencies.

We transitioned from 'the meek shall inherit the planet' toward 'the humble will perish from cholera'

As disorienting as it is to witness the president attempt to overturn the established notion regarding democracy and replace it with its complete opposite, there exists a significant segment within America who might not perceive it entirely new. That is those of us – within elder demographics almost a majority – who were educated as mainline Protestant Christians.

We have watched over the years while conservative evangelical congregations transformed the Christ we learned about into the total contrary of who we understood him to be. Essentially, they transformed an image of compassion into an icon of hostility who approves exactly the harshness that he denounced in the Gospel; this transformation occurred at a slower pace, over decades as opposed to months, yet it remains disturbing through similar means, a bewildering emotional blow for countless people.

A Toxic Christianity Gains Ground

Hence I shall explain the Christ from my upbringing, as conceptually Jesus is the center within Christian belief, and because the fastest-growing cadre of Americans might have little sense of him since they are non-believers or agnostics or religiously unaffiliated. I take no issue with these various perspectives, nor with different religions; yet I maintain that there are pearls of substantial value in the Christian story.

It is unquestionably absolutely not the narrative of a mighty king emerging; instead, a baby is born to parents without shelter in a storage space, who are forced to hastily depart to another nation to evade undercover officers. The baby grows up in modest conditions, an employed craftsman; his teaching concerns compassion for fellow humans, specifically for the impoverished – and not a sentimental love, but practical compassion, expressed by feeding and sheltering. Christ's response to hostility is to turn the other cheek – not as an act of compliant endurance, but as a means to instruct the aggressor; his method regarding offenses is that if an individual takes your jacket you ought to provide him your sweater also.

The apparent and straightforward truth that the Jesus from scripture calls for a kind of extreme compassion centered on the needy has consistently rendered Christianity something of a provocative belief system: engaging for the general public, but because of its intrinsic extremism demanding to be controlled. During the 1950s it was restrained by dilution – Protestant Christianity was so widespread that it basically blessed current circumstances.

A Struggle for the Highest Among Us

Therefore I have felt encouraged to see the persistent defiance regarding Trump arise during the previous year. It has provided great solace to assist in constructing the campaign that has protested openly through repeated demonstrations, and likely has encouraged electorate to participate in large quantities in the off-year elections. We will need to continue it, and through comparable resolve, with American flags throughout each rally and requests to the highest qualities of American history.

We shall be interrogated ... about how you treated the stranger? Did you welcome them and welcome him or refuse?

The country is optimally secured, essentially, through connection to the best about American history, similar to Christianity is most protected through connection to what makes it unique and wonderful, specifically the model of Jesus. In neither case does it mean acting as if the most negative regarding America and Christian faith never occurred; it means both humility and conviction, a mixture that genuine American Christians should be comfortable with.
